Iconic heritage sites open winter weekends

To celebrate the start of the 2014 visitor season, Peel Castle, Laxey Wheel and Castle Rushen will open early to the public at weekends from Saturday 15 February to Sunday 23 March 2014, with the first weekend opening free to all visitors. 

Timed to coincide with the half term break, the weekend openings provide an opportunity for both visitors and local residents to explore three of the Island’s most iconic heritage sites outside of the traditional season.

Edmund Southworth, Director of Manx National Heritage said:

“Late winter and early spring is often a beautiful time of year on the Isle of Man and we hope that both residents and visitors will enjoy the opportunity to visit Castle Rushen, Peel Castle and Laxey Wheel. Visitors to Laxey Wheel will also have the chance to learn about some of the repair and conservation work planned to take place to the iconic waterwheel”.

The House of Manannan, Manx Museum, Niarbyl and the Sound are open all year round. All other Manx National Heritage sites will open daily from Saturday 29 March 2014.

The Island’s Victorian Steam Railway Service will also begin on Friday 7 March and the Manx Electric Railway will commence services on Friday 4 April.

Local residents planning to undertake multiple visits are encouraged to join the Friends of Manx National Heritage, an annual membership is £30 and £20 for an additional adult at the same address.
