Isle of Man Heritage Open Days 15th Anniversary Programme Launched
The largest heritage event in the Isle of Man’s calendar returns for its fifteenth anniversary year next month, when Heritage Open Days takes place over two consecutive weekends from 4 – 6 October and 11 – 13 October 2024.
Isle of Man Heritage Open Days are a proud celebration of our heritage as a community. To take part in the festival, organisations, individuals and groups provide free public access to buildings, landscapes and displays. Some buildings have been opened-up for the first time and some events provide new insights into the historic environment via guides and exhibitions. The events take place all over the Island and have inspired people to embrace the heritage on their doorstep. The entire festival is free to attend.
As hosts, Manx National Heritage fund and coordinate Isle of Man Heritage Open Days, which brings together public, private and charitable sectors as well as many individuals and volunteers who are keen to share their well-kept secret locations, stories and knowledge to deliver a programme of behind-the-scenes tours, talks and walks – sharing our heritage in inspiring ways.
Connie Lovel, Executive Director of Manx National Heritage said:
“Heritage Open Days has become embedded in our annual programme and we know many people look forward to it. The event originally started on the Island with the idea of opening places that were normally hidden from view or difficult to access. Fifteen years on, it has become a celebration of the Island’s built and natural heritage, and the many aspects of Manx culture”.
Within the programme, Manx National Heritage will be offering the opportunity to explore the Natural History Collections at the Manx Museum; an opportunity to discover the work involved in conserving objects and curating the Isle of Man TT Gallery; a behind the scenes opportunity to explore the national art collection and an insight into the work underway to curate the world’s largest Archibald Knox exhibition at the Manx Museum in 2025. There will also be a Manx language tour of the Large Object Store offering the opportunity to learn about some of the larger objects in the national collection.
Partner events include the opportunity to discover giants, explosions and a cable to the world in a history and folklore tour of Port Cornaa with Culture Vannin, a behind the scenes tour of Douglas City Hall, an Open House at the Gaiety Theatre and performances on the Wurlizter Organ in the Villa Arcade. Guided tours of King Williams College, Isle of Man Railways Workshops, Golden Meadow Mill and Lorne House will also take place, amongst a host of other fascinating tours, exhibitions and open day events.
